Privacy Policy
Introduction
Welcome to Buzzer ("we," "our," or "us").
Buzzer is a party buzzer and quiz game for iPhone, iPad and Android. It has a big buzzer button, quick reflex games, quiz nights, and rooms where everyone buzzes in from their own phone.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, why, and what you can do about it.
By using the app, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
Information We Collect
No Account Required
The app does not ask you to sign up. It does not collect your real name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, or location.
When you first open the app, it creates a random app identifier and a secret key. On iPhone and iPad they are stored in the device keychain; on Android, in the app's private storage. This is how the app recognises your progress. It is not linked to your Apple ID or Google account.
Nickname and Progress
The app gives you a random nickname and avatar (for example "Swift Otter 42"). You cannot type your own nickname for leaderboards, so nothing personal appears there.
We store, linked to the random app identifier:
- Your nickname and avatar
- Your level, XP, daily streak, and weekly league
- Your best scores and leaderboard entries
- How many free plays and free tries you have used, by day
- Your time zone, so daily limits and the daily challenge reset at the right time
Rooms
When you host or join a room, you can type a display name for that room. Room names are shown only to the other players in that room and are filtered for offensive words.
During a game we process each player's buzz times, scores, and emoji reactions so the room can decide who buzzed first. Room data is deleted automatically about 3 hours after the room ends.
Nearby rooms (iPhone and iPad only) connect phones directly over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Nothing from a Nearby room is sent to our servers.
Microphone, Camera, and Location
The app does not use the microphone, the camera, or your location.
Device Verification
To stop cheating and abuse of free plays, our server checks that requests come from a genuine copy of the app on a real device:
- On iPhone and iPad, the app uses Apple's App Attest and DeviceCheck services.
- On Android, the app uses Google Play Integrity, which tells our server whether the app was installed from Google Play and runs on a genuine Android device. The app also creates a signing key in the Android Keystore, which never leaves your device, and signs its requests with it.
Apple and Google do not give us your device's identity, and these checks never include personal information.
Purchase Information
Subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store on iPhone and iPad, and by Google through Google Play on Android.
We do not collect or store your payment card details.
We may receive:
- Subscription status
- Purchase confirmation
- Transaction identifiers
- Product entitlement information
Device Information
We may automatically collect:
- Device model
- Operating system version
- App version and language
- The random app identifier
- Crash reports
- Diagnostic information
When the app talks to our servers, we also receive the information any internet connection includes, such as your IP address. We use it only to run the service and protect it from abuse. We do not use it to identify you.
Analytics Information
We may collect information about how you use the app, including:
- App opens and how long a session lasts
- Which screens and tabs are viewed
- Games started and finished, with the game, the score, and whether it was the daily challenge
- When free plays run out
- Quiz nights started and finished, with the number of teams and questions
- Rooms hosted and joined, and whether they were online or nearby
- Paywall views, purchases, and restores, including the error message when one fails
- App performance metrics and error reports
These events carry the random app identifier and a random analytics device identifier created by Mixpanel. They never include room names or your email address. Mixpanel is set not to look up your location from your IP address.
Support Emails
The support button opens your email app with a message addressed to us. The app fills in its version, your device model, the operating system version, the app language, and whether you have Plus. You can read and change all of this before you send it. When you send it, we receive your email address and everything in the message.
How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Run the games, rooms, leaderboards, and weekly leagues
- Count free plays and free tries, and unlock purchases
- Prevent cheating and abuse
- Improve app functionality
- Monitor performance and fix crashes
- Respond to support requests
We do not show ads, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Data Storage
Settings, best scores, and your random app identifier are stored on your device. On iPhone and iPad, the app identifier and your free-play counts are kept in the device keychain, so deleting and reinstalling the app does not reset them. On Android they are removed when you uninstall the app.
Your nickname, progress, scores, and room data are stored on our servers, which run on Amazon Web Services in the European Union (Frankfurt).
The quiz narrator's voice is downloaded from our content delivery network. These downloads contain no personal information.
Sharing of Information
We do not sell personal information.
We share information only with service providers that help operate the app:
- Cloud hosting providers
- Analytics providers
- Crash reporting providers
- Subscription and payment providers
These providers may only use information as necessary to provide services on our behalf.
Third-Party Services
The app uses the following third-party services:
- Amazon Web Services (servers, database, and content delivery)
- Mixpanel (analytics)
- Sentry (crash reporting)
- RevenueCat (subscription management)
- Apple App Store, App Attest, and DeviceCheck (iPhone and iPad)
- Google Play billing and Google Play Integrity (Android)
These services operate under their own privacy policies.
Data Retention
- Room data is deleted automatically about 3 hours after a room ends
- Daily usage counters are deleted automatically after 3 days
- Your nickname, progress, and scores are kept until you delete them
- Mixpanel, Sentry, and RevenueCat keep the data they receive under their own retention rules
You can delete your data at any time in the app: Settings → Delete my data. This removes your nickname, progress, scores, and league entries from our servers.
To prevent abuse, we keep a record of which free plays and free tries have already been used, linked only to the random app identifier. Deleting your data does not reset them.
Deleting your data does not cancel a subscription. You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple ID settings (iPhone and iPad) or in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions (Android).
You may also request deletion of your data by contacting us.
Children's Privacy
The app does not ask anyone, including children, for an account, an email address, or contact details. Leaderboard nicknames are generated randomly, so children cannot share personal information there.
If you believe a child's personal information has reached us, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to remove it.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to:
- Access your information
- Correct inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your information
- Request a copy of your information
- Withdraw consent where applicable
To exercise these rights, contact us using the information below. Because the app does not use accounts, tell us your current nickname (shown in Settings) so we can find your records.
Security
All data sent by the app is encrypted in transit. Requests to our servers are signed and verified, and each device's key is stored in the device keychain (iPhone and iPad) or the Android Keystore.
However, no security system can guarantee complete protection.
International Users
Your information is stored in the European Union. Analytics, crash reports, and subscription information may also be processed in the United States by Mixpanel, Sentry, RevenueCat, Apple, and Google. By using the app, you consent to such processing where permitted by law.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically.
Any updates will be reflected by revising the "Last Updated" date above.
